BC: Let's Get a Federal Sunshine Law

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/04/27

Last week in Regina, I finally met John Williamson, the former federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and current Conservative MP for New Brunswick Southwest. You can’t help but like the guy—he’s personable, honest and smart.

Not to pump his tires too much, but he’s also put forward an incredibly important piece of legislation that I hope the federal government adopts. Williamson wants Ottawa to release a “sunshine list”—a database of every federal bureaucrat who earns more than $100,000.

We have this in B.C. and in local municipalities, and it has proven to be a valuable accountability tool. In fact, the Vancouver Sun loaded it all into a searchable database, which thousands and thousands of British Columbians have used.

This is a positive step forward—I hope the Conservatives get it done.
